Use BankBridge with WooCommerce

Bank payments and account verification at WooCommerce checkout with Plaid: the two ACH routes (Transfer, or Auth with a processor), setup steps and testing.

Last updated by the PluginLoom team

BankBridge is compatible with WooCommerce, so shoppers can connect a bank account through Plaid Link during checkout. With Plaid there are two ways to turn that connection into a payment: Plaid Transfer, where Plaid moves the money, or Plaid Auth with a payment processor, where a processor such as Stripe or Dwolla moves it.

Which payment route should I use?#

Pick the route that matches how you want money to move.

Plaid's partner docs say partner money movement covers US institutions, plus Canada through VoPay, Modern Treasury or Finix.

How does a bank payment work at checkout?#

The flow below is the standard Plaid pattern. Your exact checkout screens depend on your BankBridge settings.

  1. The shopper chooses to pay by bank.
  2. Plaid Link opens. The shopper logs in to their bank and picks one account.
  3. Your server exchanges the public_token for an access_token.
  4. Optional risk checks run: Balance for funds, Signal for return risk, Identity for ownership.
  5. The payment is created through Transfer or through your processor.
  6. The order waits until the payment is confirmed, then moves to processing.

ACH is not instant. Stripe, for example, says ACH Direct Debit can take up to 4 business days to confirm success or failure (Stripe docs (opens in a new tab)). Hold shipping until the payment settles, or use Signal and Balance to decide when it is safe to ship early.

How do I set up the Stripe processor route?#

Plaid's Stripe guide (opens in a new tab) lists these steps on the Plaid and Stripe side:

  1. In Stripe, make sure ACH Direct Debit is enabled under Settings > Payment Methods.
  2. In the Plaid Dashboard Integrations section, click Connect to link your Stripe account.
  3. Complete your Plaid application and company profiles.
  4. Plaid creates a one-time Stripe bank account token (btok_...) after the shopper links an account.

Plaid says that to use this with Stripe's Payment Intents API you must be manually enabled by Stripe. In Sandbox, Plaid's tokens use Stripe's test bank account, and Plaid notes its Sandbox is not compatible with Stripe Sandboxes, so use Stripe test mode.

How do I set up the Plaid Transfer route?#

  1. Apply for Transfer in the Plaid Dashboard. You can build in Sandbox while you wait.
  2. Add Transfer to your Plaid products in BankBridge.
  3. Set your webhook URL so TRANSFER_EVENTS_UPDATE reaches your site (webhooks doc).
  4. Test a full order, a failed payment and a refund in Sandbox.

Can I verify a bank account without taking payment?#

Yes. Plaid Auth confirms a real, open checking or savings account, and Identity can check the owner's name. This is useful for B2B buyers paying on account, vendor payouts, or high value orders. See the bank account verification guide.

Does it work with the Checkout block?#

Many stores use the WooCommerce Cart and Checkout blocks. WooCommerce's docs say a payment method must register with registerPaymentMethod and a server side AbstractPaymentMethodType class to show in the Checkout block (WooCommerce docs (opens in a new tab)). Check the BankBridge changelog for the checkout types your version supports.

What should I test before going live?#

  1. A successful bank payment and the order status change.
  2. A shopper who closes Link without finishing.
  3. A failed or returned payment, and what the order and the shopper see.
  4. A refund from the WooCommerce order screen.
  5. An OAuth bank, to confirm your redirect URI works.

ACH rules from Nacha apply to online debits. See the ACH payments guide. This is general information, not legal or financial advice.
