BankBridge from $79/yr

Plaid for WordPress. Customers link, verify and pay by bank on WooCommerce, Elementor and MemberPress.

  • 14-day store credit
  • Secure checkout by Stripe
  • Updates and support for a year

Short answer: the main Plaid alternatives for a US website are Stripe Financial Connections, MX, Teller, Yodlee and Mastercard's open finance service (the company once called Finicity). If you only need to verify a bank account before an ACH debit, you may not need an aggregator at all: micro-deposits and prenotes still count as account validation under Nacha's rules. For a WordPress or WooCommerce site, the right choice depends on three things: who moves the money, which checks you need beyond "this account is real", and whether a WordPress integration already exists.

Disclosure: PluginLoom makes BankBridge, a WordPress plugin for Plaid. That gives us a reason to favour Plaid, so every claim about other providers below comes from that provider's own website, checked on 24 October 2026. Where a provider does not publish something, we say so instead of guessing.

What does "Plaid alternative" actually mean?#

People use the phrase for three different jobs. It helps to know which one you have before you compare anything.

  • Bank data aggregator: a service that lets a customer log in to their bank inside a secure window and share account details with your site. Plaid, MX, Teller, Yodlee and Mastercard's service do this.
  • Instant account verification: the narrow use of an aggregator to confirm an account and routing number are real and open, so you can debit it. Stripe Financial Connections is built mainly for this.
  • Pay by bank: moving the money. Plaid does this with Plaid Transfer in the US. Most other aggregators hand verified details to a payment processor, which moves the money.

A WooCommerce store taking ACH payments needs the second and third jobs. A budgeting member area needs the first. A lending or rental application may need all three plus identity checks.

How we compared them#

We used five criteria that matter to a site owner, not to a fintech engineering team:

  1. What it does, in the provider's own words.
  2. Public pricing, meaning a price you can read without talking to sales.
  3. Self-serve start, meaning you can sign up and test without a sales call.
  4. WordPress fit, meaning a maintained plugin or an existing WooCommerce path.
  5. Fallback for customers whose bank cannot be linked.

We did not rank "best overall". The right pick changes with your processor and your use case.

Two things stand out. First, Stripe is the only provider here that prints per-check prices on its website. Second, outside Plaid and Stripe, none of these providers has a WordPress.org plugin, so using MX, Teller, Yodlee or Mastercard on a WordPress site means a custom integration.

When is Stripe Financial Connections the better choice?#

Pick Stripe Financial Connections when all of these are true:

  • You already process payments with Stripe, or are happy to.
  • Your customers have US bank accounts.
  • You need "is this account real and do they own it" more than deeper data.

The cost is easy to predict. On Stripe's US pricing page, ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5.00 cap, and an instant verification is $1.50. A $400 order paid by ACH therefore costs $3.20 in processing plus $1.50 if you verify the account instantly. Stripe also offers Instant Bank Payments at 2.6% + 30¢, which confirms the payment immediately and, per Stripe's docs, has bank-initiated returns guaranteed by Stripe.

We compared Plaid and Stripe in more depth in Plaid vs Stripe Financial Connections.

When is Plaid still the better choice?#

Plaid covers more ground than the alternatives on the pages we checked. Choose it when you need any of these:

  • Return risk scores before you debit. Plaid Signal scores how likely an ACH debit is to be returned.
  • A processor other than Stripe, such as Dwolla, Adyen or Checkbook, through Plaid's processor partner program, or Plaid moving the money itself with Transfer.
  • Accounts outside the US. Plaid Auth returns Canadian, European and UK account details as well as US ones.
  • Identity checks at sign up with Plaid Identity Verification.
  • A fallback for unlinkable banks inside the same flow. Plaid's Transfer docs describe same-day micro-deposits and database checks for users who cannot or do not want to log in to their bank.

Do you need a Plaid alternative at all?#

Maybe not. If the real goal is to debit a customer's bank account online, the rule you must meet is Nacha's, not Plaid's. Since 19 March 2021, Nacha requires the fraud detection system for online consumer debits (WEB debits) to "at a minimum, validate the account to be debited" on first use. Nacha lists acceptable methods:

  1. a prenotification entry;
  2. ACH micro-transaction verification;
  3. a commercially available validation service;
  4. account validation through APIs, which is what Plaid and its competitors provide.

Nacha also says ownership is not part of the minimum: the account must be "a legitimate, open account to which ACH entries may be posted". So an aggregator is a faster and nicer experience, not the only legal route.

What does it cost to skip account validation?#

Skipping validation is the one choice that has no upside. Nacha's own page says: "Nacha does not consider a fraudulent transaction detection system that does not include an account validation component as sufficient." In practice the cost shows up as returns:

Return codeMeaningWhy validation prevents it
R02Account closedA live check sees the account is closed
R03No account or unable to locate accountThe number does not match a real account
R04Invalid account numberThe number fails the bank's checks

R02, R03 and R04 make up Nacha's administrative return family, which has a 3.0% inquiry level. If you use Plaid Transfer, Plaid's own limit is stricter: 2.5% for administrative returns, according to its returns documentation. Every one of those returns is also an order you shipped or a membership you activated without being paid. See ACH return codes for the full list.

BankBridge from $79/yr

Plaid for WordPress. Customers link, verify and pay by bank on WooCommerce, Elementor and MemberPress.

How to choose, step by step#

  1. Write down who moves the money. Stripe, another processor, or Plaid Transfer. This removes half the options at once.
  2. List the checks you need. Account validation only, or also balance, ownership, return risk or identity.
  3. Check where your customers bank. US only, or Canada and Europe too.
  4. Check the WordPress path. If there is no plugin, budget for a developer to build and maintain Link-style flows, token storage and webhooks.
  5. Test the unhappy paths in a free environment. A customer whose bank is not listed, a customer who closes the window, and a returned payment.
  6. Add a fallback. Offer micro-deposits or another payment method so a missing bank never loses you the sale.

Where BankBridge fits#

If your answers point to Plaid, BankBridge is the WordPress side of it. It opens Plaid Link from WooCommerce checkout, MemberPress signups and Elementor layouts, exchanges and stores the tokens on your server, and handles Plaid's webhooks. You connect your own Plaid account, so Plaid bills you directly and BankBridge never sits between you and your bank data. For payments, you can use Plaid Auth with Stripe or another processor, or Plaid Transfer; the WooCommerce doc shows both routes.

You can click through a bank connection in Plaid's Sandbox on the live demo before you buy, then choose a plan for the number of sites you run.

If your answers point to Stripe Financial Connections instead, you do not need BankBridge: the WooCommerce Stripe Gateway already covers it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I link a bank account without Plaid?

Yes. Stripe Financial Connections, MX, Teller, Yodlee and Mastercard's open finance service (formerly Finicity) all connect bank accounts. You can also skip bank logins entirely and verify an account with micro-deposits or a prenote, which Nacha accepts as account validation for online debits. These methods are slower because the customer has to wait for small deposits to arrive.

Which is better, Plaid or Stripe?

It depends on where your money moves. If you already take payments with Stripe and only need US bank accounts verified for ACH, Stripe Financial Connections is the shortest path: Stripe lists $1.50 per instant verification and free micro-deposit verification. If you need ACH return risk scores, identity checks, Canadian or European accounts, or a payment processor other than Stripe, Plaid covers more ground.

What should I do if my bank isn't listed on Plaid?

Offer a fallback that does not need a bank login. Micro-deposits and prenotes work with any US account that accepts ACH entries. Plaid itself offers same-day micro-deposits and database checks for accounts that cannot be linked by login, according to its Transfer documentation.

How do I take ACH payments without Plaid?

Use a processor that verifies accounts on its own. Stripe ACH Direct Debit verifies with Financial Connections or micro-deposits and costs 0.8% capped at $5.00 per payment on Stripe's US pricing page. Authorize.net eCheck lists 0.75% per transaction plus a $25 monthly gateway fee. Both have WooCommerce plugins.

Is there a free Plaid alternative?

For testing, yes: Plaid, Teller and Stripe all have free test environments, and Teller's development environment allows 100 real-bank enrollments for free. For live use, no aggregator we checked is free, but micro-deposit verification is free on Stripe.

The short version

Put this guide to work with BankBridge

The problem

Adding Plaid to WordPress usually means a custom build: Link tokens, an OAuth redirect, webhooks, and a way to tie bank accounts to orders and members.

How BankBridge solves it

BankBridge does that work as a plugin. You add your own Plaid keys, place Plaid Link with a block or shortcode, and it handles verification, webhooks and the WooCommerce and MemberPress hooks.
