Leaves out card surcharges (Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards), dispute and return fees, monthly plan fees and any Plaid fees, which Plaid bills separately. ACH takes a few business days to settle and a debit can be returned, so it fits larger and repeat orders best.

How the numbers work

A card fee is a percentage of the order plus a fixed amount, so it grows with every dollar. A capped ACH fee stops growing: on Stripe's published US rates (checked 26 October 2026) a card costs 2.9% + 30¢ and ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% with a $5.00 cap.

OrderCard (2.9% + 30¢)ACH (0.8%, $5 cap)Difference
$50$1.75$0.40$1.35
$200$6.10$1.60$4.50
$625$18.43$5.00$13.43
$2,000$58.30$5.00$53.30

The cap is reached at $625. Above that, every extra dollar a customer pays by bank costs you nothing more, which is why invoices, wholesale orders, memberships and high-ticket items gain the most.

What it leaves out

  • Card surcharges. Stripe adds 1.5% for international cards and 1% when currency conversion is needed.
  • Disputes. Stripe charges $15.00 for each dispute received.
  • Returns and timing. ACH settles in a few business days and a debit can be returned. See ACH return codes.
  • Bank data fees. If you verify accounts with Plaid, Plaid bills its own fees. See Plaid pricing explained.

Taking bank payments on WooCommerce

BankBridge adds Plaid's bank login to WooCommerce checkout and MemberPress signups, so customers pick their bank instead of typing account numbers, with optional balance and identity checks before the debit. You can try it in Plaid's Sandbox on the live demo. For the full setup options, read how to accept ACH payments in WooCommerce.

Questions

How do I calculate credit card processing fees?

Multiply the order total by the percentage rate and add the fixed fee. On Stripe's published US rate of 2.9% + 30¢, a $450 order costs $13.05 + $0.30 = $13.35. Do the same for every order in the month, or multiply the fee on your average order by your number of orders.

How much cheaper is ACH than a card?

It depends on the order size. On Stripe's published US rates (checked 26 October 2026), ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5.00 and a card is 2.9% + 30¢. On a $50 order that is $0.40 against $1.75. On a $450 order it is $3.60 against $13.35, and on a $2,000 order the ACH fee stops at $5.00 while the card fee is $58.30.

Does this calculator include every fee?

No. It covers the per-payment rate and one bank verification per new payer. It leaves out international card and currency surcharges, dispute fees, ACH failure or return fees, monthly plan fees and bank data fees from providers such as Plaid. Add those from your own contract if they apply.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The numbers you type stay in your browser and the calculation runs on the page. Nothing is stored or sent to PluginLoom.

When is ACH not worth offering?

On small one-off orders the saving is small, ACH takes a few business days to settle, and a debit can be returned after it settles. Bank payments pay off most on larger orders, invoices, memberships and repeat customers.
