Plaid vs Stripe Financial Connections

Plaid vs Stripe Financial Connections compared: data types, countries, how payments work, what pricing is public, and when each one fits a WordPress site.

By the PluginLoom teamLast updated 14 sources

Plaid and Stripe Financial Connections both let a customer log in to their bank so you can verify the account and read permissioned data such as balances and ownership. The real difference is scope: Financial Connections lives inside Stripe and is built around Stripe payments, while Plaid is a separate network that works with many processors (Stripe included) and adds products like identity checks, risk scores and its own US money movement. If you already run every payment through Stripe and only need US bank accounts, Financial Connections is the simpler choice; if you need other processors, Canadian or UK accounts, or Plaid's wider product set, Plaid fits better.

What is Stripe Financial Connections?#

Stripe Financial Connections is Stripe's tool for letting users share data from their financial accounts with your business. Stripe's Financial Connections docs (opens in a new tab) say one integration can "instantly verify bank accounts for ACH payments," check balances, verify account ownership, and pull transaction data.

Stripe names three main use cases:

  1. ACH payments. Collect a bank account for ACH Direct Debit and use account data such as balances.
  2. Connect payouts. Collect a bank account for payouts to connected accounts on a Stripe Connect platform.
  3. Data products. Collect accounts to build things like personal finance apps.

The supported data types are balances, ownership (account owner names and mailing addresses) and transactions. Customers can also save and reuse their bank details across Stripe businesses through Stripe's Link.

What is Plaid?#

Plaid is a financial data and payments company whose client-side component, Plaid Link, helps users connect their bank accounts to your app. The Plaid docs (opens in a new tab) group its products into payments and funding (Auth, Balance, Identity, Signal Transaction Scores, Transfer, Investments Move, Payments in Europe), financial insights (Transactions, Investments, Liabilities, Enrich), KYC and anti-fraud (Identity Verification, Monitor, Protect), credit and underwriting (Consumer Report by Plaid Check, Assets, Statements, Income) and instant onboarding (Layer).

For bank payments, the key product is Auth (opens in a new tab). It returns account and routing numbers for checking, savings and cash management accounts. Plaid states that Auth must be used with a payment processor, either a Plaid partner or a third party. That is the main design difference from Stripe: Plaid does not assume which processor you use.

Side by side comparison#

The table below compares the two on the points that matter most for a store or membership site. Every row comes from the vendors' own docs or pricing pages, checked October 23, 2026.

How do payments work with each one?#

With Financial Connections, the bank link and the payment happen inside Stripe. Stripe's ACH Direct Debit docs (opens in a new tab) say the customer signs in to their bank in a pop-up (or a redirect on mobile), accepts a mandate, and completes the purchase. If the customer types the account number by hand, Stripe verifies it with micro-deposits, and the customer has 10 days to confirm them.

With Plaid, the bank link happens in Plaid Link, and the payment happens wherever you choose:

  1. Your server creates a link_token and your page opens Plaid Link.
  2. The customer logs in to their bank and picks an account.
  3. Link returns a short-lived public_token, which your server exchanges for an access_token.
  4. Your server either hands the account to a processor (with a processor token) or reads the account and routing numbers with /auth/get and sends them to your own processor.
  5. In the US, you can instead move the money with Plaid Transfer (opens in a new tab), which supports ACH, RTP, RfP, wire and FedNow after Plaid approves your Transfer Application.

Can you use Plaid and Stripe together?#

Yes, and many businesses do, because Stripe is one of Plaid's listed partners. Plaid's Stripe integration guide (opens in a new tab) lays out the flow:

  1. Confirm ACH Direct Debit is enabled in your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. In the Plaid Dashboard's Integrations section, connect your Stripe account.
  3. Create a link_token with products: ["auth"] and launch Link. Plaid recommends single account select.
  4. Exchange the public_token for an access_token.
  5. Call /processor/stripe/bank_account_token/create with the access_token and account_id.
  6. Use the returned btok_ token to create a Stripe customer. It is a one-time use token.

Two details are worth knowing before you plan around this. First, Plaid says that to use Plaid with Stripe's Payment Intents API, "you will need to be manually enabled by Stripe." Second, Plaid's Sandbox is not compatible with Stripe Sandboxes, so you test with Stripe test mode. Sandbox tokens always match Stripe's test bank account 000123456789 with routing number 110000000.

What does each one cost?#

Stripe publishes Financial Connections prices; Plaid does not publish per-product prices. As listed on stripe.com/pricing (opens in a new tab) on October 23, 2026:

Stripe itemListed price
ACH Direct Debit0.8%, $5.00 cap
Instant bank account verification$1.50 per successful instant verification
Micro-deposit verificationFree
Balances$0.10 per successful API call
Ownership (account owners)$1.50 per successful API call
Transactions$0.30 per institution per account holder per month

Plaid's pricing page (opens in a new tab) lists three plans: Pay as You Go (month to month, no upfront commitment), Growth (a 12 month commitment with discounted rates) and Custom (volume pricing). It shows no plan prices, and some products say "Contact for pricing." Plaid's billing docs (opens in a new tab) explain how each product is charged: Auth and Identity are a one-time fee per Item, Transactions and Liabilities are monthly subscriptions per Item, and Balance and Signal are a flat fee per successful request. Sandbox is always free. Our Plaid pricing guide goes through each model.

The honest takeaway: with Stripe you can estimate costs before you sign up. With Plaid you need a quote or a Pay as You Go account to see your rates. This guide is general information, not legal or financial advice.

Which countries does each one support?#

Stripe Financial Connections works only with US bank accounts, even though businesses in many countries can use it. The Stripe docs list the US plus a long list of European countries (Germany, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain and others), the UK, Switzerland and Norway as eligible business locations. The customer's bank account must be in the US.

Plaid's coverage depends on the product. Per the Auth docs (opens in a new tab), Auth returns US ACH and wire numbers, Canadian EFT institution and transit numbers, European IBAN and BIC, and UK sort codes and account numbers. Plaid's partner money movement is limited to US institutions, plus Canada through VoPay, Modern Treasury or Finix. Plaid Transfer is US only.

If you sell to Canadian or UK customers who want to pay by bank, that difference alone can decide it.

When should you pick Stripe Financial Connections?#

Stripe Financial Connections is the better fit when Stripe is already your only processor and your bank-paying customers are in the US. Pick it if:

  • You take every payment through Stripe Checkout or the Payment Element and want bank payments on the same invoices and reports.
  • You want prices you can read on a public page before you start.
  • You do not need identity document checks, watchlist screening or non-US bank accounts.
  • You would rather have Stripe show and store the ACH mandate for you. Stripe says it does this automatically when you use Checkout or the Payment Element.

On WooCommerce, the official Stripe extension lists ACH among its additional payment methods (opens in a new tab), so a Stripe-only store may not need anything else.

When should you pick Plaid?#

Plaid is the better fit when you want bank data or bank payments that are not tied to one processor. Pick it if:

You can also do both: link with Plaid and pay with Stripe, using the processor token flow above.

What about WordPress?#

On WordPress, the choice usually comes down to which payment plugin you already run. If your store uses the Stripe extension and your customers are in the US, Stripe's bank options may be all you need. If you want Plaid Link on your site, whether for WooCommerce checkout, MemberPress signups or an Elementor page, you need a plugin or custom code that creates link tokens on your server, exchanges tokens and stores access tokens safely.

BankBridge is a WordPress plugin that connects your site to Plaid. It is built to work with WordPress, WooCommerce, Elementor, MemberPress and more. You bring your own Plaid account and keys, and Plaid bills its fees to you directly. To see how setup works, check the BankBridge docs, starting with Getting started and Connecting your Plaid keys. For background on the Plaid side, read How Plaid works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between Plaid and Stripe Financial Connections?

Stripe Financial Connections is part of Stripe and is built around Stripe payments and Stripe accounts. Plaid is a standalone data and payments network that works with many payment processors, including Stripe, and also offers its own money movement through Plaid Transfer in the US.

Can I use Plaid with Stripe?

Yes. Plaid lists Stripe as an Auth partner. After a user links a bank account in Plaid Link, your server calls /processor/stripe/bank_account_token/create to get a one-time Stripe bank account token (it starts with btok_), which you use to create a Stripe customer.

Is Stripe Financial Connections pricing public?

Yes. As listed on stripe.com/pricing on October 23, 2026, instant bank account verification is $1.50 per successful verification, balances are $0.10 per successful API call, ownership is $1.50 per successful call, and transactions are $0.30 per institution per account holder per month. Micro-deposit verifications are free.

Does Plaid publish its prices?

No. Plaid's pricing page lists three plans (Pay as You Go, Growth and Custom) but no per-product prices. Some products say Contact for pricing. Sandbox testing is free.

Which one works outside the US?

Stripe Financial Connections is offered to businesses in the US and many European countries, but for use with US bank accounts. Plaid Auth supports US, Canadian, European and UK account details, while Plaid Transfer is US only.
