Buy BankBridgeShort answer: Same Day ACH settles an ACH bank payment on the day it is sent. The Federal Reserve's FedACH schedule has three same-day file deadlines, 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Eastern, settling at 1:00, 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Eastern. Each payment can be up to $1 million, rising to $10 million on September 17, 2027.
Dated note: this guide reflects the FedACH schedule, Nacha's rules page and Plaid's docs as checked on October 29, 2026. We will update it when the $10 million limit takes effect or a window changes.
Same Day ACH is ten years old this year. Nacha says the first same-day credits went out in September 2016, and the network has grown fast since: Nacha counted 1.4 billion Same Day ACH payments worth $3.9 trillion in 2025, and 838.7 million payments worth almost $2.4 trillion in the first half of 2026 alone. The big news for 2027 is the tenfold limit increase. This guide covers what that means, what the deadlines really are in your time zone, and how fast a customer's bank payment reaches you on a WordPress or WooCommerce store.
What is Same Day ACH?#
Same Day ACH is a faster settlement option inside the normal ACH Network, not a separate network. The same banks, the same account and routing numbers, the same authorization rules and the same return rules apply. The only difference is timing: the payment is submitted in a same-day processing window and settles that afternoon or evening instead of on a later business day.
Nacha, the body that writes the ACH rules, says "virtually all types of ACH payments, including both credits and debits, are eligible for same-day processing." When the rule launched, the only exceptions were international payments (IAT entries) and payments above the dollar limit. The limit has since been raised twice, and a third increase is approved.
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| ODFI | The originating bank, which sends the payment into the network for a business |
| RDFI | The receiving bank, where the customer's account is |
| ACH Operator | The Federal Reserve (FedACH) or The Clearing House, which sort and settle files between banks |
| Settlement | The moment the banks' positions are settled with each other |
| Same Day Entry fee | An interbank fee the sending bank pays the receiving bank for each same-day payment |
Do ACH payments post the same day?#
Yes, if they are sent as Same Day ACH and reach the ACH Operator before a same-day deadline. A standard ACH payment does not. It settles on a future business day, and the Federal Reserve's schedule shows future-dated items settling at 8:30 a.m. ET on that later day.
"Posts" can mean two things, so it helps to be precise:
- Settlement is when the banks settle with each other. For Same Day ACH, that is 1:00, 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. ET on the day of the window.
- Availability is when the person or business can use the money. Nacha's rules have required receiving banks to make funds from same-day ACH credits available by 5:00 p.m. in the bank's local time since March 16, 2018. For a business collecting a debit, availability depends on its own provider's hold rules (see the Plaid example below).
A debit that settles the same day can still be returned later. Insufficient funds returns usually come back within two banking days, and a consumer can claim a debit was unauthorized for up to 60 days. Our ACH return codes guide lists each code and its window. Speed does not remove that risk.
What are the Same Day ACH cutoff times?#
The cutoff that matters to you is your provider's, not the Federal Reserve's. Banks and payment providers need time to build and send files, so they set their own deadlines earlier than the network deadline. Here are both layers.
The network deadlines (FedACH)#
The Federal Reserve publishes this schedule for same-day eligible forward items, effective since September 12, 2022:
| Window | File must reach FedACH by | Target distribution to banks | Settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10:30 a.m. ET | Noon ET | 1:00 p.m. ET, same day |
| 2 | 2:45 p.m. ET | 4:00 p.m. ET | 5:00 p.m. ET, same day |
| 3 | 4:45 p.m. ET | 5:30 p.m. ET | 6:00 p.m. ET, same day |
The third window is the newest. The Federal Reserve's FAQ lists March 19, 2021 as the date that "created a third Same Day ACH processing window that expands Same Day ACH availability by two hours."
A provider's deadlines (Plaid Transfer example)#
Plaid publishes the cutoffs it uses for Plaid Transfer, which is one of the two payment routes BankBridge supports:
| Plaid window | Plaid cutoff | Settlement date | Approximate funds availability to Plaid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same Day #1 | 8:20 a.m. ET | Same day (1:00 p.m. ET) | 1:00 p.m. ET |
| Same Day #2 | 12:50 p.m. ET | Same day (5:00 p.m. ET) | 5:00 p.m. ET |
| Same Day EOD | 3:00 p.m. ET | Same day (about 6:00 p.m. ET) | End of day, about 6:00 p.m. ET |
| Standard | 8:30 p.m. ET | Next day (about 9:00 a.m. ET) | Morning of settlement date |
Plaid recommends submitting "at least 15 minutes before the cutoff time," and says Same Day ACH transfers submitted after 3:00 p.m. ET and before 8:30 p.m. ET are automatically changed to Standard ACH. Your bank or processor may use different times, so ask for its schedule in writing.
Same Day ACH cutoff times in every US time zone#
Most cutoff tables only show Eastern time, which trips up stores in the West. We converted both schedules into the four main mainland US time zones.
How we computed this: we took the Eastern times published by the Federal Reserve and Plaid (checked October 29, 2026) and subtracted 1 hour for Central, 2 for Mountain and 3 for Pacific. All four zones change clocks on the same dates, so the gap holds all year. Arizona (most of the state) does not observe daylight saving time, so in summer it matches Pacific time and in winter it matches Mountain time. Hawaii and Alaska are not shown.
FedACH network deadlines#
| Window | Eastern | Central | Mountain | Pacific |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1, file deadline | 10:30 a.m. | 9:30 a.m. | 8:30 a.m. | 7:30 a.m. |
| 1, settlement | 1:00 p.m. | 12:00 p.m. | 11:00 a.m. | 10:00 a.m. |
| 2, file deadline | 2:45 p.m. | 1:45 p.m. | 12:45 p.m. | 11:45 a.m. |
| 2, settlement | 5:00 p.m. | 4:00 p.m. | 3:00 p.m. | 2:00 p.m. |
| 3, file deadline | 4:45 p.m. | 3:45 p.m. | 2:45 p.m. | 1:45 p.m. |
| 3, settlement | 6:00 p.m. | 5:00 p.m. | 4:00 p.m. | 3:00 p.m. |
Plaid Transfer cutoffs#
| Plaid window | Eastern | Central | Mountain | Pacific |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same Day #1 | 8:20 a.m. | 7:20 a.m. | 6:20 a.m. | 5:20 a.m. |
| Same Day #2 | 12:50 p.m. | 11:50 a.m. | 10:50 a.m. | 9:50 a.m. |
| Same Day EOD | 3:00 p.m. | 2:00 p.m. | 1:00 p.m. | 12:00 p.m. (noon) |
| Standard | 8:30 p.m. | 7:30 p.m. | 6:30 p.m. | 5:30 p.m. |
The Pacific column is the one to remember. A California store using Plaid Transfer has to create the transfer by noon local time, and in practice by 11:45 a.m. with Plaid's 15 minute buffer, to settle the same day. An order placed at 1:00 p.m. in Los Angeles is already a next-day payment.
When will a customer's payment settle? A worked timeline#
To make the rules concrete, we modeled a WooCommerce order paid by bank debit through Plaid Transfer with the network set to Same Day ACH, created the moment the customer clicks Place order.
How we computed this: each row applies Plaid's published cutoffs, its 15 minute recommended buffer, its rule that late same-day transfers become Standard ACH, and its statement that ACH windows run only on banking days. "Tuesday" means a normal banking day with no holiday that week. We assumed the transfer is approved at once; a pending risk review would add time.
| Customer clicks Place order | Window used | Settles |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 7:30 a.m. ET | Same Day #1 (cutoff 8:20 a.m.) | Tuesday, about 1:00 p.m. ET |
| Tuesday 10:00 a.m. ET | Same Day #2 (cutoff 12:50 p.m.) | Tuesday, about 5:00 p.m. ET |
| Tuesday 2:00 p.m. ET | Same Day EOD (cutoff 3:00 p.m.) | Tuesday, about 6:00 p.m. ET |
| Tuesday 2:50 p.m. ET | Inside the 15 minute buffer: may make EOD, not guaranteed | Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning |
| Tuesday 4:00 p.m. ET | Changed to Standard ACH (cutoff 8:30 p.m.) | Wednesday, about 9:00 a.m. ET |
| Tuesday 12:30 p.m. PT (3:30 p.m. ET) | Changed to Standard ACH | Wednesday, about 9:00 a.m. ET |
| Friday 4:00 p.m. ET | Standard ACH | Monday, about 9:00 a.m. ET |
| Saturday, any time | Held until the next banking day's first window | Monday, about 1:00 p.m. ET |
Two lessons come out of this table. First, the afternoon is where same-day speed is lost, and the further west your customers are, the earlier that afternoon starts. Second, weekends erase most of the difference: a Friday evening order settles on Monday either way.
Settlement is still not money in your bank account. Plaid's flow of funds docs say that after a debit settles, funds sit in a pending state for a hold period that depends on factors such as the reserve you keep with Plaid, and are "typically made available at approximately 3:00 PM ET on the last day of the hold period." Withdrawing them to your business checking account is itself done by Same Day ACH "and may take up to one additional business day." Other processors work differently. Stripe, for example, says ACH Direct Debit "can take up to 4 business days" to confirm success or failure. Our Stripe ACH fees guide covers what Stripe charges for that.
What is the Same Day ACH limit?#
The limit today is $1 million per payment. It rises to $10 million per payment on September 17, 2027.
| Date | Per-payment limit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| September 2016 (launch) | $25,000 | Nacha rules page |
| March 20, 2020 | $100,000 | Federal Reserve FAQ and Nacha |
| March 18, 2022 | $1 million | Nacha rule page and press release |
| September 17, 2027 (approved) | $10 million | Nacha new rules page and April 27, 2026 post |
Nacha's April 27, 2026 post says the $10 million rule was "just approved by the Nacha membership" and that "the current $1 million rises to $10 million on Sept. 17, 2027." Nacha expects the higher limit to help "invoice payments, payroll funding, cash concentration, tax payments, and merchant settlement." That is a business-to-business story; few online shoppers will ever pay $1 million by bank. It matters to WordPress sites that sell high-value services, take large deposits or settle with vendors.
What happens to a payment above the limit? It is not rejected. Nacha's rule page says the ACH Operators "will edit for the $1 million limit" and "assign next day settlement" to over-limit items, and the Federal Reserve's FAQ confirms that in a mixed batch, only the over-limit items move to the next business day. Nacha also says you must not split one larger payment into several same-day entries to get under the limit. Separate invoices that each fall under the limit can each go same day.
Your provider may set a lower limit than the network. Plaid's Transfer docs, for instance, say ledger deposits and withdrawals requested with the same-day network "are limited to $1M each," and BankBridge has its own per-transfer maximum setting so you can cap bank payments well below that.
What does Same Day ACH cost?#
There are two different fees, and only one is public.
- The interbank Same Day Entry fee. The Federal Reserve's 2015 Federal Register notice says Nacha set this fee, paid by the sending bank to the receiving bank for each forward same-day payment, at an initial 5.2 cents, and that under Nacha's rules it "may not be increased from its initial level." The Federal Reserve's FAQ adds that returns are not charged the fee.
- What your bank or provider charges you. This is a commercial price and varies. Banks and processors often charge more for Same Day ACH than for standard ACH. Ask for the price per item before you turn it on, and compare it with the cost of waiting a day.
If you are weighing bank payments against cards in general, our free card vs ACH fee calculator shows the per-order difference using published processor rates.
Who can use Same Day ACH?#
Any business whose bank or payment provider offers it. Nacha's rules require all receiving banks to accept same-day payments, which is why a same-day debit reaches nearly every US checking and savings account. What varies is the sending side: your bank or provider decides whether to offer Same Day ACH to you, at what limit and at what price.
Eligibility at a glance:
| Payment | Same Day eligible? |
|---|---|
| Consumer ACH debit from a checkout (WEB) | Yes |
| Business-to-business debit or credit (CCD) | Yes |
| Payroll and other credits (PPD) | Yes |
| International ACH transaction (IAT) | No |
| Any single payment over the current limit | No, moved to next-day settlement |
| Future-dated payment | Settles on its future date |
What is the quickest bank transfer method?#
An instant payment network, if both banks support it. Here is how the main US options compare:
| Method | Speed | Runs on weekends and holidays? | Per-payment network limit | Can a business pull (debit) with it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FedNow (Federal Reserve) | Seconds | Yes, all day, every day | $10 million network limit announced September 2025; banks may set lower | No, push only; request for payment varies by bank |
| RTP (The Clearing House) | Seconds | Yes, 24/7/365 | Up to $10 million, per The Clearing House | No, push only; request for payment varies by bank |
| Wire | Same day, usually within hours | No | Set by your bank | No, push only |
| Same Day ACH | Same banking day, in batches | No | $1 million, $10 million from September 17, 2027 | Yes, with authorization |
| Standard ACH | Next business day or later | No | Set by your bank | Yes, with authorization |
The Federal Reserve Board says FedNow went live on July 20, 2023 and lets "individuals and businesses to send instant payments through their depository institution accounts." The Clearing House says RTP has processed over 1.8 billion transactions since 2017 and lets participants "send up to $10 million per transaction."
The column that matters most for a store is the last one. Instant networks are push payments: the customer sends the money. ACH debits are pull payments: the store collects the money after the customer authorizes it, which is why ACH remains the standard for checkouts, subscriptions and invoices. Plaid Transfer uses RTP and FedNow for what it calls Instant Payouts, which send money out (credits), and says roughly 70% of US accounts can receive them. For a deeper look at "instant" claims, read can you accept ACH payments instantly?, and for wires, ACH vs wire transfer.
What are ACH payment types?#
ACH payments come in two directions and are labeled with a three-letter Standard Entry Class (SEC) code that tells the banks how the payment was authorized.
| Code | Name | Typical use | Used by an online store? |
|---|---|---|---|
| WEB | Internet-initiated or mobile entry | A consumer authorizes a debit online, such as at checkout | Yes, the most common |
| TEL | Telephone-initiated entry | A consumer authorizes a debit by phone | Sometimes, for phone orders |
| PPD | Prearranged payment and deposit | Payroll credits and consumer debits authorized in writing | Rarely for checkout; common for credits |
| CCD | Corporate credit or debit | Payments to or from a business account | Yes, for B2B buyers |
Plaid's Transfer docs allow WEB, TEL and PPD for consumer debits, PPD for consumer credits, and CCD for business accounts. BankBridge lets you choose the class it sends (WEB, PPD, CCD or TEL) and asks for the business name when a payment is sent as CCD, because Plaid expects the business as the account holder. Every one of these types can travel as standard or Same Day ACH. For the push and pull difference, see ACH debit vs ACH credit, and for the basics, what is an ACH payment?.
What is safer, ACH or Zelle?#
It depends on which side you are on, and they are built for different jobs.
- Zelle is for paying people you know. Zelle's help center says money sent to an enrolled recipient "is sent directly to your recipient's bank account and cannot be canceled. This is why it's important to only send money to people you know and trust." Zelle also says qualifying imposter scams may be eligible for reimbursement through your bank.
- An ACH debit gives the payer strong rights. A consumer who did not authorize a debit can have it returned for up to 60 days, and the store bears the loss. That protects shoppers, and it is the reason a store needs a clear authorization record and account checks.
For a business collecting money from customers, Zelle is not a checkout method: there is no authorization to pull money, no integration with a cart and no return path. An ACH debit with a recorded authorization is the normal tool. Our ACH fraud prevention guide explains how to keep the return risk down.
Can Zelle do an ACH transfer?#
No. Zelle is its own service, available in "over 2,400 bank and credit union apps" according to Zelle. You send money with the recipient's email address or US mobile number, and Zelle says it is "typically available to an enrolled recipient within minutes." An ACH transfer uses the ACH Network and needs a routing number and account number, or a token that stands for them. If you want to move money between your own accounts at two banks by ACH, use your bank's external transfer feature, which often offers standard or next-day timing.
Same Day ACH news: what changed in 2026 and what is next#
Nacha lists these dated rule changes on its new rules page (checked October 29, 2026). Two touch timing directly.
| Effective date | Rule | Why a store should care |
|---|---|---|
| March 20, 2026 and June 22, 2026 (in practice) | Fraud monitoring, Phases 1 and 2 | Every business that originates ACH debits needs risk-based processes to spot unauthorized or false-pretenses payments. See Nacha's 2026 fraud monitoring rule. |
| September 18, 2026 | Funds availability for non-Same Day credits | Nacha removed the old 5:00 p.m. receipt condition, so funds from standard ACH credits must be available at 9:00 a.m. (receiving bank's local time) on settlement date. Refunds you send by standard ACH can be usable by customers earlier on the settlement day. |
| September 17, 2027 | Same Day ACH limit to $10 million | Larger B2B, deposit and settlement payments can move the same day. |
| March 17, 2028 | New return code R90 for sanctions compliance | A new reason code to recognize in return handling. |
The growth numbers explain why Nacha keeps expanding the service. In the second quarter of 2026, Nacha reported 435.7 million Same Day ACH payments, up 29.5%, worth $1.3 trillion, up 28.1%. Nacha's yearly figures on its Same Day ACH page show growth from 697.5 million payments in 2022 to 1.4 billion in 2025.
How to use Same Day ACH on a WordPress site#
- Pick your route. With BankBridge you either move money with Plaid Transfer, where Plaid offers ACH, Same Day ACH and RTP, or use Plaid Auth to pass a verified account to a processor such as Stripe. The WooCommerce setup doc compares the two.
- Get approved. Plaid approves each business for Transfer through its application. A processor has its own approval and its own same-day rules.
- Set the network. In BankBridge's Transfer settings, the network can be ACH, Same Day ACH or RTP. Choose Same Day ACH if your Plaid pricing makes sense for it.
- Check accounts first. Same-day settlement does not stop returns. Use Plaid Auth for account validation, and Balance or Signal to judge return risk before you debit. Nacha requires WEB debit originators to validate an account the first time it is used.
- Record the authorization. The customer ticks a box to accept your debit authorization text. BankBridge saves that text on the WooCommerce order and, with an acceptance timestamp, on the transfer record. Our ACH authorization form guide shows what the wording needs.
- Watch webhooks. Plaid sends transfer status events. BankBridge listens for them so a WooCommerce order moves when the payment settles or fails. See the webhooks doc.
- Tell customers the timing. Put the cutoff in your local time on the checkout page, for example "Bank payments made before 11:45 a.m. Pacific on business days settle the same day."

How BankBridge helps#
BankBridge brings Plaid Link, Auth, Balance, Identity, Signal and Transfer into WordPress, WooCommerce, MemberPress and Elementor. For speed, the parts that matter are the Transfer network setting (ACH, Same Day ACH or RTP), status webhooks that update orders, and risk checks that let you decide whether to ship before settlement. You can watch a bank payment go through on the live demo, or see plans and buy BankBridge. Plaid bills its own fees on your Plaid account, separately from the plugin.

Frequently asked questions
Do ACH payments post the same day?
They can. A Same Day ACH payment settles on the day it is sent if your bank or provider submits it before one of the three same-day deadlines. The Federal Reserve's FedACH schedule lists file deadlines of 10:30 a.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. ET, with settlement at 1:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET. Standard ACH payments settle on a later business day.
What is the quickest bank transfer method?
Instant payment networks are faster than any ACH. The FedNow Service, live since July 20, 2023, and The Clearing House's RTP network settle each payment in seconds, around the clock. Same Day ACH is the fastest form of ACH, but it only runs on banking days and settles in batches. Your bank must support the instant network you want to use.
What are ACH payment types?
There are two directions and several entry codes. An ACH credit pushes money, like payroll. An ACH debit pulls money, like a bill payment. Each entry also carries a Standard Entry Class code: WEB for debits authorized online, TEL for phone, PPD for other consumer payments and CCD for business accounts. Any of them can be standard or Same Day.
What is safer, ACH or Zelle?
They protect different people. Zelle says payments to an enrolled recipient cannot be canceled, so it is meant for people you know and trust. A consumer ACH debit can be returned as unauthorized for up to 60 days, which protects the payer but leaves the business exposed. For a store collecting payments, ACH debits with authorization and account checks are the normal choice.
Can Zelle do an ACH transfer?
No. Zelle is a separate person-to-person service inside more than 2,400 bank and credit union apps, according to Zelle. You send by email address or US mobile number, not by routing and account number, and the money is usually available in minutes. An ACH transfer uses the ACH Network and the account and routing numbers.
What is the Same Day ACH limit?
$1 million per payment today, a limit in place since March 18, 2022. Nacha members approved raising it to $10 million per payment, effective September 17, 2027. Payments over the limit are not rejected; the ACH operators move them to next-day settlement.
Is Same Day ACH available on weekends?
No. ACH windows run on banking days only. A payment created on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday goes out in the first window of the next banking day.

The short version
Put this guide to work with BankBridge
The problem
Adding Plaid to WordPress usually means a custom build: Link tokens, an OAuth redirect, webhooks, and a way to tie bank accounts to orders and members.
How BankBridge solves it
BankBridge does that work as a plugin. You add your own Plaid keys, place Plaid Link with a block or shortcode, and it handles verification, webhooks and the WooCommerce and MemberPress hooks.
