Short answer: not in the way most people mean. Standard ACH is a batch system, so an ACH debit from a customer settles the same day at best, with Same Day ACH, and can still be returned for up to 2 banking days (60 calendar days if the customer says it was unauthorized). The truly instant US rails, RTP and FedNow, move money in seconds but are push payments: the payer sends them, you cannot pull them at checkout. What an online store can get instantly is a decision: a verified account, a real-time balance check and a risk score before you accept the order, followed by Same Day ACH. Stripe sells a product that also takes the return risk off you for a higher fee.

Why "instant ACH" is confusing#

Search results mix up four different things. Here they are side by side, using the providers' own documentation, checked on 24 October 2026.

MethodWhen you know it workedCan a store pull it from a customer?Cost on public pagesCan it come back?
Standard ACH debitNext banking day settlement; Stripe says up to 4 business days to confirmYes, with authorizationStripe ACH Direct Debit: 0.8%, $5 capYes: 2 banking days for most returns, 60 days for unauthorized
Same Day ACH debitSame banking day if sent before the cutoffYes, with authorizationVaries by providerYes, same return windows
RTP or FedNowSecondsNo. Push only; Plaid's Instant Payouts are credits onlyVaries by providerPlaid says Instant Payouts cannot be cancelled once sent
Stripe Instant Bank PaymentsInstant confirmationYes, through Stripe's Link2.6% + 30¢Stripe says bank-initiated returns are guaranteed by Stripe

Two definitions help:

  • Settlement is when the banks exchange the money. It is not the same as "final".
  • Return is the customer's bank sending a settled debit back with a reason code, such as R01 for insufficient funds.

How fast can Same Day ACH be?#

Same Day ACH is the fastest way to pull money with ACH. Plaid publishes the windows it uses for Plaid Transfer:

WindowCutoff at Plaid (Eastern)Settles
Same Day 18:20 AMSame day, about 1:00 PM
Same Day 212:50 PMSame day, about 5:00 PM
Same Day end of day3:00 PMSame day, about 6:00 PM
Standard8:30 PMNext banking day, about 9:00 AM

Plaid adds that ACH windows only run on banking days, so an order placed on Friday evening is not submitted until Monday. Plaid also cites a Same Day ACH limit of $1 million per transaction.

Settlement is also not the moment the money reaches your own bank account. With Plaid Transfer, debit funds are held in your Plaid Ledger and Plaid says they become available "typically 2-5 days after the transfer has settled", depending on your reserve, with withdrawal to your bank taking up to one more business day.

What about RTP and FedNow?#

RTP (run by The Clearing House) and FedNow (run by the Federal Reserve) are real-time networks. They are fast, but they push money from the payer. In Plaid Transfer, the rtp network covers both rails, and Plaid's docs say: "Only credit style transfers (where you are sending funds to a user) can be sent using Instant Payout transfers." Plaid also says roughly 70% of US accounts can receive Instant Payouts.

So real-time rails are useful for the opposite direction: paying out refunds, rebates, vendor payouts or marketplace earnings in seconds. For collecting payment, the real-time equivalent is Request for Payment, where you send the customer a request and they approve a push payment. At Plaid, rfp was in closed beta when we checked.

What does it cost to treat ACH as instant?#

This is the risk section, and it is where stores lose money. If you ship or grant access the moment a customer submits an ACH payment, you carry every return that follows.

  1. Insufficient funds. Plaid calls R01 "by far the most common return type". It can arrive up to 2 banking days after settlement.
  2. Closed or wrong accounts. R02, R03 and R04 also arrive within 2 banking days, and they count toward Nacha's 3.0% administrative return level.
  3. "I did not authorize this." R10 and R11 can arrive up to 60 calendar days later. Nacha watches unauthorized returns above 0.5% of your debits, and Plaid Transfer's own limit is 0.4%.

A returned debit is not just lost revenue. It is the product you shipped, possibly a return fee from your processor, and a mark against your return rates. That is why "accept ACH payments instantly" should mean "decide instantly, settle quickly, release goods when the risk is acceptable".

How to accept bank payments as fast as safely possible#

  1. Verify the account at checkout. A bank login through Plaid or Stripe Financial Connections confirms the account on the spot. Nacha has required validation of the account before the first WEB debit since 19 March 2021.
  2. Check the balance in real time for larger orders, so an obvious R01 never gets sent.
  3. Score the return risk. Plaid's authorization step runs its Signal risk checks and returns approved or declined with a reason. Plaid notes it approves by default when it cannot predict the risk, so read the reason, not just the decision.
  4. Send by Same Day ACH and submit before the 3:00 PM Eastern cutoff where you can. Plaid suggests Same Day ACH for Friday debits to reduce weekend balance changes.
  5. Release the order by risk level. Ship low-risk digital goods or small orders straight away; hold high-value physical orders until the 2-banking-day return window passes.
  6. Use real-time rails for payouts and refunds, where speed helps the customer and there is no return risk to you.
  7. If you need instant certainty, pay for it: Stripe Instant Bank Payments at 2.6% + 30¢ moves the return risk to Stripe, which is still below the 2.9% + 30¢ Stripe lists for cards.

A worked example: a $1,200 order on a Thursday#

Here is how a single bank payment plays out with the steps above, using Plaid's published windows. The store sells furniture and the customer pays $1,200 by bank at 11:40 AM Eastern on a Thursday.

WhenWhat happens
Thursday 11:40 AMCustomer logs in to their bank in Plaid Link and picks a checking account. The account is validated.
Thursday 11:41 AMA real-time balance check shows enough available funds. The return-risk check approves the debit. The order is accepted and the customer sees "payment processing".
Thursday 12:50 PMThe debit goes out in the second Same Day ACH window.
Thursday about 5:00 PMThe debit settles.
Monday end of dayThe 2-banking-day window for insufficient funds and closed accounts has passed with no return. The store ships.
Up to 60 calendar daysAn unauthorized claim (R10 or R11) is still possible, which is why the authorization text and the bank login record matter.

Compare the same order paid by card at 2.9% + 30¢ on Stripe's US pricing: $35.10 in fees. On Stripe ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% with a $5 cap, it is $5.00. The store waits two extra business days to ship and keeps $30.10 more, with the risk checks keeping the chance of an R01 low.

What should you tell customers?#

Most complaints about bank payments come from expectations, not failures. Say three things on the checkout and in the confirmation email:

  • When the money leaves their account, for example "today or the next banking day".
  • When you ship or start the service, for example "within 2 business days of payment".
  • What the line on their bank statement will say, so they recognise it.

If you offer both cards and bank payments, tell customers which is faster to ship. Some will pick the card for speed and others will happily wait to help you avoid card fees, especially on large orders.

How BankBridge speeds up bank payments#

BankBridge puts the "decide instantly" part inside WordPress. At WooCommerce checkout or a MemberPress signup, the customer logs in to their bank with Plaid Link. BankBridge can then call Plaid Balance for available funds and Plaid Signal for the chance of a return, before the order is accepted. With Plaid Transfer the debit can go by Same Day ACH, and Transfer also supports RTP and FedNow payouts. With Plaid Auth you can hand a token to a processor such as Stripe instead. Order status follows Plaid's webhooks, so an order moves to processing only when the payment is confirmed.

Try the flow in Plaid's Sandbox on the live demo, read the WooCommerce doc, then choose a plan. Plaid Transfer needs Plaid's approval for your business, and Plaid bills its own fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can ACH payments be received the same day?

Yes, with Same Day ACH, if the debit is submitted before the day's cutoff. Plaid lists three Same Day windows with cutoffs at 8:20 AM, 12:50 PM and 3:00 PM Eastern, settling the same banking day. Settlement is not final, though: most returns can still arrive within 2 banking days, and unauthorized returns within 60 calendar days.

What is the difference between an instant bank transfer and a normal bank transfer?

An instant transfer over RTP or FedNow moves money in seconds, any time, and cannot be cancelled once sent. A normal ACH transfer is sent in batches on banking days and settles the same day or the next day. ACH can pull money from a customer with their authorization; RTP and FedNow payments are pushed by the payer.

What is the difference between ACH push and pull payments?

A pull (ACH debit) is when your business takes money from the customer's account after they authorize it, which is how online eCheck and pay by bank checkouts work. A push (ACH credit) is when the account holder sends money out, as with payroll or a refund. Real-time rails such as RTP and FedNow are push payments.

Is there a way to get paid by bank instantly at checkout?

You can get an instant decision, not instant final money, with standard ACH. Stripe's Instant Bank Payments confirm immediately and Stripe says bank-initiated returns are guaranteed by Stripe, at 2.6% + 30¢ on its US pricing page. With Plaid, you can check balance and return risk in real time and then send the debit by Same Day ACH.

Can I use RTP or FedNow to take payments from customers?

Not directly as a pull. Plaid's docs say only credit transfers, where you send funds to a user, can use its Instant Payouts over RTP or FedNow. Request for Payment, where you ask the customer to push a real-time payment, was in closed beta at Plaid when we checked on 24 October 2026.

The short version

Put this guide to work with BankBridge

The problem

Adding Plaid to WordPress usually means a custom build: Link tokens, an OAuth redirect, webhooks, and a way to tie bank accounts to orders and members.

How BankBridge solves it

BankBridge does that work as a plugin. You add your own Plaid keys, place Plaid Link with a block or shortcode, and it handles verification, webhooks and the WooCommerce and MemberPress hooks.
