Short answer: ACH is the cheap, batched way to move money between US bank accounts; a wire is the fast, final way. At the big banks we checked on 26 October 2026, sending a domestic wire cost $25 to $40 online or in a branch, and receiving one could cost $15, while ACH transactions were no charge on a standard Chase business account. Wires arrive the same day and cannot be pulled back once processed. ACH settles the same or next banking day, and debits can be returned. For a store checkout, ACH is the one that fits; wires suit large, one-off B2B payments.

How much does a wire transfer cost? Bank fees compared#

These are the published fees on each bank's own pages on 26 October 2026. Your account type can change them; premium accounts often waive some.

BankOutgoing domesticOutgoing internationalIncoming
Chase (Business Complete Checking, fee schedule effective 14 June 2026)$25 on chase.com, $35 in a branch$40 in US dollars on chase.com; $5 in foreign currency ($0 at $5,000 or more); $50 in a branch$15 domestic or international; $0 if the sender used Chase's site, app or a Chase banker
Bank of America$30$45 in US dollars; no wire fee in foreign currency, "but exchange rate markups apply""may incur a $15 fee per wire"
Wells FargoDigital wires "range from $0-$30"; branch wires $40Included in the same digital and branch ranges$0 for consumer and non-analyzed business accounts; $15 for analyzed business accounts

ACH is cheaper at the same banks. Chase's fee schedule lists electronic deposits and ACH transactions as no charge on Chase Business Complete Checking, and Chase's ACH payment service charges $2.50 for each of the first 10 payments a month and $0.15 after that, with no monthly fee. Same Day ACH on that service is 1% of the payment, capped at $25.

For a business that receives payments at checkout, the relevant cost is the processor's fee, not the bank's. Stripe, for example, lists ACH Direct Debit at 0.8% capped at $5.00. A $5,000 order paid by ACH through Stripe costs $5.00; the same amount wired in costs the customer up to $40 to send and can cost you $15 to receive.

How fast is ACH compared to a wire?#

Wires are fast within banking hours. Bank of America says domestic outbound wires have a 5 p.m. Eastern cutoff "and funds typically arrive the same day (business days only)", while international wires "typically arrive in 1 to 5 business days." Wells Fargo's cutoffs are 3:00 pm Pacific for domestic wires and 2:20 pm Pacific for international ones. Chase notes that an incoming wire "can take 24 hours to reflect in your account after it gets to Chase."

Behind the bank, Fedwire's business day starts at 9:00 p.m. Eastern the evening before and ends at 7:00 p.m. Eastern, Monday to Friday, excluding holidays, and transfers for a bank's customers must start by 6:45 p.m. Eastern.

ACH works in batches. Nacha says the network "settles payments four times every banking day", that Same Day ACH payments "can be settled as quickly as a few hours", and that nothing settles on weekends or federal holidays. In practice your processor adds its own time on top: Stripe says ACH Direct Debit settles in up to 4 business days, or 2 for eligible accounts.

So the honest comparison is: a wire lands within hours on a business day; an ACH payment lands the same or next banking day at the network level, and a few business days later through most online processors.

Can you reverse an ACH payment or a wire?#

This is the biggest difference, and it cuts both ways.

Wires are final. The Federal Reserve describes Fedwire transfers as "immediate, final, and irrevocable once processed." Banks give you a short window before that: Chase says same-day domestic wires cannot be canceled, and future-dated ones can be canceled until 11:59 PM Eastern the day before. Wells Fargo says "Not all wires can be canceled", only those still showing Scheduled status.

ACH debits can come back. When your business pulls a payment from a customer's account, the customer's bank can return it, for example for insufficient funds. Stripe says customers can dispute an ACH debit on a personal account "for up to 60 calendar days", or up to two business days for a business account. The return codes and windows are in ACH return codes.

That is why sellers like wires and buyers like ACH. Finality protects the receiver. Returns protect the payer.

Which is riskier for fraud?#

For a business sending money, wires. Because a wire cannot be pulled back, criminals target them. The FBI's 2025 IC3 Annual Report lists business email compromise losses of $3,046,598,558 in 2025, and defines BEC as "a scam targeting businesses or individuals working with suppliers and/or businesses regularly performing wire transfer payments." The usual pattern is a spoofed email that changes a supplier's bank details. Call the supplier on a known number before you wire to new details.

For a business receiving money at checkout, the risk sits with ACH debits: a customer can pay with an account that is not theirs, or without the funds, and the debit comes back days later. The tools for that are account verification and pre-debit checks, covered below and in bank account verification for WordPress.

ACH routing number vs wire routing number#

A routing number identifies the bank. Whether the ACH and wire numbers match depends on the bank:

BankWire routing numberACH / direct deposit routing number
Chase021000021 for incoming domestic wiresChase's ACH file guide uses the same number (021000021)
Bank of America026009593Depends on the state where the account was opened (for example 121000358 for California)
Wells Fargo121000248Same number shown, but some accounts opened in Southern California show a different number on checks; Wells Fargo says "You can use either number"

For international wires, a SWIFT code is used instead of a routing number: CHASUS33 at Chase, BOFAUS3N at Bank of America for US dollar wires, WFBIUS6S at Wells Fargo. Bank of America's own advice applies everywhere: some banks use different numbers for wires and ACH, so confirm the number with the bank before you send.

ACH vs wire vs EFT: what is the difference?#

EFT (electronic funds transfer) is the umbrella term. The CFPB's Regulation E defines an electronic fund transfer as "any transfer of funds that is initiated through an electronic terminal, telephone, computer, or magnetic tape" to debit or credit a consumer's account. ACH payments, debit card payments and ATM withdrawals all fall under it.

Wires are electronic too, but Regulation E excludes "Any transfer of funds through Fedwire or through a similar wire transfer system" used mainly between financial institutions or businesses. That exclusion is one reason consumer protections differ between the two.

Limits and scale#

Nacha's 2025 figures show how widely ACH is used: the network processed "35.2 billion payments valued at $93 trillion" in 2025. Same Day ACH has a per-payment limit of $1 million, in effect since 18 March 2022, and Nacha announced on 27 April 2026 that it rises to $10 million on 17 September 2027. Larger Same Day entries are not rejected; they settle the next day.

Wire limits are set by your bank. Wells Fargo, for example, limits how much you can wire digitally per day and per rolling 30 days, sends larger wires through a branch, and says "We don't limit how much money you can receive with wires."

When should a business use ACH, and when a wire?#

Should an online store take ACH at checkout?#

If your orders are large or recurring, usually yes. A wire is not a checkout payment: your site cannot start one, the customer has to go to their bank, and you reconcile it by hand. An ACH debit can be started from your checkout once the customer authorizes it and you validate the account.

The cost case is simple. On Stripe's public pricing, a $1,000 card payment costs $29.30 at 2.9% + 30¢; the same payment by ACH Direct Debit is $5.00. Taking that money by wire instead would cost your customer $25 to $40 at the banks above, which many will not pay.

The catch is the return risk explained above. Shipping a $1,000 order on an ACH debit that bounces two days later is the real cost. Before you debit, you want to know the account is real, that it belongs to the buyer, and that it holds the money.

What a store needs to take ACH safely#

  1. A processor that supports ACH debits. Options and fees are compared in ACH payment processors for small business; Stripe's costs are broken down in Stripe ACH fees.
  2. Clear authorization wording at checkout, and a copy for the customer.
  3. Account validation on first use. A bank login does this in one step.
  4. A plan for holds. Ship after the payment clears, or after risk checks.
  5. Watch your return rate. See Nacha return rate thresholds.

If speed is what draws you to wires, read Can you accept ACH payments instantly?, which covers Same Day ACH, RTP and FedNow. Setup steps for WooCommerce are in How to accept ACH payments in WooCommerce.

How BankBridge helps a store take ACH instead of wires#

BankBridge adds Plaid Link to WooCommerce checkout and MemberPress signups, so a customer pays by bank from your checkout instead of sending a wire. They log in to their bank in Plaid's window and pick an account; Plaid Auth confirms the account, which covers first-use validation. Before the debit, BankBridge can run Plaid Balance for available funds, Plaid Identity to compare the account owner with the buyer, and Plaid Signal to score the chance of a return.

The money then moves through a processor such as Stripe or Dwolla, or through Plaid Transfer, which Plaid describes as supporting ACH, RTP, RfP, wire and FedNow in the US once Plaid approves your business. Setup is in the WooCommerce doc.

Plans start at $79 a month for a single site ($149 for five sites, $299 for unlimited). Plaid bills its own fees separately. If your buyers are mostly businesses that already pay by wire, and orders are few, a bank transfer invoice may be all you need. Otherwise, try the bank connection in Plaid's Sandbox on the live demo, then pick a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ACH and a wire transfer?

An ACH payment is batched and settled through the ACH network, usually the same day or the next banking day, at low cost, and debits can be returned. A wire is sent one payment at a time through a system such as Fedwire, which the Federal Reserve describes as immediate, final and irrevocable once processed. Wires cost more, often $25 to $50 to send at the big banks we checked.

Which is safer, ACH or wire?

It depends which side you are on. For the person receiving money, a wire is safer because it is final. For the person sending, ACH is safer because there are rules for returns and disputes. That finality is why wire fraud is costly: the FBI's 2025 IC3 report put business email compromise losses at $3,046,598,558, and it describes BEC as a scam targeting businesses that regularly make wire transfer payments.

Is the ACH routing number the same as the wire routing number?

Sometimes. Chase gives 021000021 for incoming domestic wires, the same number its ACH files use. Bank of America lists a separate wire routing number, 026009593, and ACH routing numbers that depend on the state where the account was opened. Bank of America itself warns that some banks use different numbers for wires and ACH, so check before you send.

How long does a wire transfer take compared to ACH?

A domestic wire sent before the bank's cutoff usually arrives the same business day; Bank of America says domestic outbound wires sent by 5 p.m. Eastern typically arrive the same day. ACH settles on banking days, either the same day with Same Day ACH or the next day. Nacha says the ACH Network settles payments four times every banking day.

Can a wire transfer be reversed?

Generally no once it has been processed. The Federal Reserve says Fedwire transfers are final and irrevocable. Banks may let you cancel before the wire goes out: Chase says same-day domestic wires cannot be canceled, and Wells Fargo says you can cancel only while a wire shows Scheduled status. An ACH debit, by contrast, can be returned, and a consumer can dispute an unauthorized one for up to 60 days.

What is the difference between ACH, wire and EFT?

EFT (electronic funds transfer) is the umbrella term. Regulation E defines it as a transfer initiated through an electronic terminal, telephone, computer or magnetic tape to debit or credit a consumer's account. ACH payments are one kind of EFT. Wires are electronic too, but Regulation E excludes Fedwire and similar wire transfers that are mainly between financial institutions or businesses.

The problem

Adding Plaid to WordPress usually means a custom build: Link tokens, an OAuth redirect, webhooks, and a way to tie bank accounts to orders and members.

How BankBridge solves it

BankBridge does that work as a plugin. You add your own Plaid keys, place Plaid Link with a block or shortcode, and it handles verification, webhooks and the WooCommerce and MemberPress hooks.
